Meta faces major regulatory setback in India over WhatsApp data-sharing

The state commission, presided over by President Sushil Kumar and Member Sudha Upadhyay, stated that "WhatsApp is a service provider company" and its provision of services within India means it "cannot be said that this company is a foreign company and the consumer complaint against it is not maintainable." The ruling directly contradicts the district commission's view that WhatsApp users are not consumers of the platform.

The Competition Commission of India has imposed a $24.5 million fine and a five-year ban on data-sharing, forcing Meta to rethink its operations in its largest market.

In a statement, Meta said, "We pushed back on requests from the Turkish government to restrict content that is clearly in the public interest, and have been fined by them as a consequence.

Performance-related layoffs are a common practice among major US corporations. Last week, Microsoft announced similar cuts impacting less than 1% of its staff.
