Cryptos, shell firms, and fake FDI: ED report exposes India’s betting syndicates

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier claimed that ₹4,500 crore were proceeds of crime of the online gaming and betting application Fairplay that has been alleged to be involved in money laundering.

The ED report highlights that many of these platforms used manipulated algorithms. While users might initially win small sums to build confidence, they were later subjected to consistent losses.

Karnataka HC spurs government to block Proton Mail over security threats

On Tuesday, the Karnataka High Court ordered the Union Government to initiate steps to block Proton Mail across India.

In March 2024, Proton Mail responded to India’s earlier blocking attempts with a strongly worded blog post, calling the action “disproportionate” and a violation of the right to privacy.

SEBI emphasized that such platforms often mimic legitimate investment avenues by using financial market terminology like "profits," "stop loss," and "trading," which may mislead users into believing they are participating in regulated securities markets.

The regulator further noted that since these platforms are neither recognized stock exchanges nor registered with SEBI, any trading of securities—if it occurs on these platforms—would be considered illegal. In such cases, both the platforms and their participants may face regulatory action.

Deloitte also raised concerns over VerSe's management of virtual assets, citing inadequate oversight in customer acceptance, pricing, segregation of duties, and user access to digital asset transfers.

In its report, Deloitte highlighted shortcomings across multiple areas, including the selection and evaluation of suppliers, approval of purchase orders and invoices, and payment processes.

In response, First Games plans to file a writ petition to challenge the SCN on legal grounds, particularly opposing the retrospective application of a GST amendment effective from October 1, 2023.

Paytm clarified that this issue is not unique to First Games, noting that the GST department has sent similar notices to several gaming companies in the past.

In November of last year, the parliamentary committee, chaired by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, called media organizations including the News Broadcasters and Digital Association and the Editors Guild of India to testify on the issue of curbing fake news.

It’s worth noting that the Fact Check Unit (FCU) under the Press Information Bureau, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), identified over 97 instances of fake news as of March 19, 2025 alone.
