Govt working on new broadcast policy to regulate OTTs

To regulate the OTT content, the Ministry of I&B is formulating a new Broadcast policy that is currently in the public domain to elicit views from the public and other stakeholders.

The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, L Murugan said that after receiving the suggestions, inputs from the industry and public, the government will introduce the policy to regulate OTTs in the Parliament.

I&B Ministry ‘suspends’ work on draft Broadcasting Bill

A research report titled The Effectiveness of Tobacco Disclaimers on OTT Content Services by Koan Advisory Group, published in May 2023, found that OTT content does not significantly influence smoking habits in India.

While the first draft was made public, the second draft of the Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill was circulated among select stakeholders in July 2024. It eventually was withdrawn by MIB saying it will ‘soon release the fresh draft’.
