The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has invited applications for two posts including principal advisor, for its headquarters in New Delhi, initially for two years. Interested candidates, who can be former government officials or experienced professionals from the private sector, can send applications by August 28.
As per the application, a person must have held the position of additional secretary to the Indian government or any comparable position to meet the requirements. Additionally, a minimum of 25 years of expertise and previous experience as a chief executive or member of the board of directors in the relevant fields are prerequisites for individuals outside of government service.
Prior to the Telecommunications Act 2023 going into effect, a person had to work as an additional secretary or in a position similar for a minimum of three years in order to be eligible to join TRAI. The three-year period has now been eliminated.

That apart, on July 5, the Union Government notified rules under the Telecommunication Act 2023, which makes only a secretary to the government or officials with equivalent rank eligible for the position of sector regulator TRAI Chairman.
“Criteria for appointment as Chairperson and Members of TRAI: Section 59(b) of the Act will amend section 4 of the TRAI Act 1997 and prescribes criteria for appointment of Chairperson and Members of TRAI,” the official said.
Last month, the government made certain sections of the Act operational from June 26 including the new rule of allowing the government to take over the control and management of any or all of any telecommunication services or network, in the interest of national security, friendly relations with foreign States, or in the event of war.
