OTT and TV audiences: One measurement system, one currency or multiple currencies?

In its recent recommendations on NBP, TRAI batted for multiple rating agencies for audience measurement across platforms including disclosure of viewership data by OTT. Advertisers and stakeholders, however, say ‘it is economically not feasible’ and recommend enhancing the existing mechanism.

At the beginning of this month, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory to all private Satellite TV channel broadcasters and operators to refrain from unfair practice of multiple uplinking of the permitted channels on multiple frequencies without the approval of the Ministry. However, some channels were seen floundering the norms.

ZEE-Sony failed merger: NCLT allows ZEE to withdraw merger implementation application

On April 16, ZEEL had said that it has decided to withdraw the merger implementation application filed before the NCLT, Mumbai bench against Sony.

ZEEL had initially filed the implementation application following the termination of the merger agreement by Culver Max and Bangla Entertainment on January 22, citing an alleged breach of the merger cooperation agreement (MCA).

National Broadcasting Policy 2024: TRAI recommends infra status for the sector

In its recommendations for the NBP 2024, TRAI has sought infrastructure status for the broadcasting status. The authority also added that MIB should digitize the process of granting permissions, approvals and clearances under a single window system.

TRAI: DD Free Dish platform needs to be upgraded to addressable systems

In the 2024 MPEG-2 e-auction, Prasar Bharati reportedly earned Rs 1,156 crore from selling 64 slots.

The authority notes concerns with the non-addressable ‘DD Free Dish’ platform as there is no effective mechanism to authenticate data on subscribers accessing DD Free Dish services. TRAI also urges for the development of OTT platforms by Prasar Bharati, in its recommendations on the National Broadcasting Policy 2024.
