Atul Chaudhary is the new TRAI secretary

A 1989-batch Indian Telecommunication Services officer, Chaudhary is an IIT Roorke graduate and holds a Master's Diploma in Public Policy and Administration from the Indian Institute of Public Administration.

The newly appointed Secretary, Chaudhary, served as the Deputy Director General (DDG) at the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in a previous capacity. In 2021, he also held the position at the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

In its recommendations for the NBP 2024, TRAI has sought infrastructure status for the broadcasting status. The authority also added that MIB should digitize the process of granting permissions, approvals and clearances under a single window system.

MIB has also highlighted certain issues that may be considered while formulating recommendations for digital radio broadcast policy.

Despite several stakeholders opposing the inclusion of OTT services in the NBP, TRAI published a consultation paper last year on the regulatory framework for OTT communication services and the selective banning of OTT services. In its recommendation paper released on June 20, TRAI outlines no such regulation – bringing relief to many.

TRAI: DD Free Dish platform needs to be upgraded to addressable systems

In the 2024 MPEG-2 e-auction, Prasar Bharati reportedly earned Rs 1,156 crore from selling 64 slots.

The authority notes concerns with the non-addressable ‘DD Free Dish’ platform as there is no effective mechanism to authenticate data on subscribers accessing DD Free Dish services. TRAI also urges for the development of OTT platforms by Prasar Bharati, in its recommendations on the National Broadcasting Policy 2024.

Department of Consumer Affairs constituted a committee comprising of representatives from DoT, TRAI, COAI, BSNL, Vodafone Idea, Reliance and Airtel to draft guidelines to address the issue of unsolicited calls. Based on such deliberations and suggestions, draft guidelines have been framed. DoCA seeks views and suggestions of the public on the proposed guidelines within 30 days, i.e. 21st July.
